Burundi, East Africa
Burundi is a country struggling to recover from over a decade of civil war and genocide. It is the second poorest country in the world. Jesus often sought out the last, the least and the lost—the women of Burundi would certainly fit that description. In 2009, a team from Trinity traveled to Burundi, in East Africa. We worked with Women of Global Action (now Tirzah International), to help women and their families move forward. Peace Nihorimbere, a native of Burundi directs a program where women are being prayed for, discipled, and trained in sewing and in hairdressing. They are learning how much God loves and values them, and that He has a future and a hope for them. Our current involvement includes mission trips to serve these women with the love of Christ and a sponsorship program called “A New Beginning.” This program allows sponsors at Trinity to support a woman in the program, providing vocational training as a seamstress, a hot meal every day, and a sewing machine with supplies upon graduation. The cost is $350.00.
Our purpose in Burundi is to help women to gain a place in God’s family and to regain a place in Burundi society. We are also hoping to do the same for street boys and young men who were caught on both sides of the civil war.
